Judging by the attitude of a society to the repositories and libraries, we can speak about the level of development of this society, since the attitude of a man the a library is the precise reflection of his cultural level, intellectual and spiritual development.

The Scientific Library of al-Farabi Kazakh State National University (KazGU) is a cultural and spiritual centre for students, professors, and the whole teaching academic staff.

The Scientific Library of KazGU is one of the largest libraries in the Republic of Kazakhstan. It was founded in 1934.

Since that time the library has been orientating its activity to satisfy the cultural needs and wants of its readers providing them with different sources, necessary in the academic process or in their research

At the start of its foundation the fund of the library was very scanty. In the 1930s a very intensive and hard job on forming the fund, first of all, an educational one, began. The university libraries of the former Soviet Union, in particular, of Moscow and Leningrad, rendered great assistance to KazGU.

Unfortunately, in 1936, half of the find was set on fire. But thanks to the efforts of the teaching and library staff, the library could manage to restore and to increase the amount of books very quickly.

At present the fund of the scientific library of KazGU exceeds 1.5 mln printed units, 120,000 copies of which are in Kazakh, 70,000 are in foreign languages.

The library possesses one of the richest finds of educational literature in the city, especially in economics and law.

Since the 1990 s much attention has been paid to the gathering and keeping of literature in the Kazakh language. The fund has at its disposal not only the classical works, but also the works of contemporary writers, such as:
Kabdolov Z. " My Auezov", (novel), 1997;
Zhakyp B. "My dear, dear" 1990.
There are also collections of interesting and various books on the history of Kazakhstan.
Nazarbayev N.A. "In the waves of history", 1999;
Askarov A. "The sons of Great Tutan", 1998;

The fund of rare books published before 1917 comes to 14 306 copies, including the so-called old Russian books - 11370 copies; books of Western edition - 1885 copies, and books of unusual size -782 copies.

The editions of the Kirillitsa print are of great interest. The collections of manuscripts such as 'Ousting of Tsar Aleksey Michailovich", "Arithmetics" by L. Magnitsry, 1703, are considered to be the masterpieces of culture of the XVII century.

The collection of reference editions of the rare books is made up of Encyclopedic Dictionaries by F.A. Brockhouse and I.A.Efron, Encyclopedic Granate Dictionary and some editions of British Encyclopedia.

A special department of the fund " Kazakhstanica" contains books connected with the history of the country published up till 1917. They are the books of famous scholars and researchers of Central Asia and Kazakhstan such as Veselovsky N., Alektrov A.E., Mushketov D.I., Pallace P.C. and others.
