|Library of al-Farabi Kazakh National University|
|As long the
civilization exists, so long the book will exist, because
the entire wisdom of mankind is concentrated in books...
Judging by the attitude of a society to the repositories and libraries, we can speak about the level of development of this society, since the attitude of a man the a library is the precise reflection of his cultural level, intellectual and spiritual development.
The Scientific Library of al-Farabi Kazakh State National University (KazGU) is a cultural and spiritual centre for students, professors, and the whole teaching academic staff.
There you can find textbooks, monographs, unique samples of fiction, rare books of XVII-XIX centuries and more than 200,000 copies of periodicals.
The Scientific Library of KazGU is one of the largest libraries in the Republic of Kazakhstan. It was founded in 1934.
Since that time the library has been orientating its activity to satisfy the cultural needs and wants of its readers providing them with different sources, necessary in the academic process or in their research
At the start of its foundation the fund of the library was very scanty. In the 1930s a very intensive and hard job on forming the fund, first of all, an educational one, began. The university libraries of the former Soviet Union, in particular, of Moscow and Leningrad, rendered great assistance to KazGU.
Unfortunately, in 1936, half of the find was set on fire. But thanks to the efforts of the teaching and library staff, the library could manage to restore and to increase the amount of books very quickly.
At present the fund of the scientific library of KazGU exceeds 1.5 mln printed units, 120,000 copies of which are in Kazakh, 70,000 are in foreign languages.
The library possesses one of the richest finds of educational literature in the city, especially in economics and law.
Since the 1990 s much attention has been paid
to the gathering and keeping of literature in the Kazakh
language. The fund has at its disposal not only the classical
works, but also the works of contemporary writers, such as:
The fund of rare books published before 1917 comes to 14 306 copies, including the so-called old Russian books - 11370 copies; books of Western edition - 1885 copies, and books of unusual size -782 copies.
The editions of the Kirillitsa print are of great interest. The collections of manuscripts such as 'Ousting of Tsar Aleksey Michailovich", "Arithmetics" by L. Magnitsry, 1703, are considered to be the masterpieces of culture of the XVII century.
The collection of reference editions of the rare books is made up of Encyclopedic Dictionaries by F.A. Brockhouse and I.A.Efron, Encyclopedic Granate Dictionary and some editions of British Encyclopedia.
A special department of the fund "
Kazakhstanica" contains books connected with the history
of the country published up till 1917. They are the books of
famous scholars and researchers of Central Asia and
Kazakhstan such as Veselovsky N., Alektrov A.E., Mushketov
D.I., Pallace P.C. and others.

The textbooks that are in deficit, are being written on CD - ROM and kept on diskettes. The library has started to produce electronic journals (Vestnik Kaz GU in 14 series) since 1998.
The issue of creating the library's own WWW-server has been solved. Our address in INTERNET to place the information about the KazGU Scientific Library is: http://lib.kazsu.kz. The works by the University professors and teaching staff are also placed on this address.
An event of great importance is the introduction of the Internet information network. The Internet hall provides the readers with information on the electronic carriers. The library won the Grant of the Eurasia Fund in spring 1999. The project in directed to the extension of Internet hall, more than 25 computers will be at the readers' disposal.
Every year the international ties of the library are widening. They are directed to the publications exchange. We also have business contacts with the embassies and other foreign agencies. We get books and journals from them.
